Doktora Tezi: Determination of Fertility Transition Stage for Roma Population in Turkey: Evidence from 2023 Roma Population Survey

Kumru Döne

The objectives of this dissertation is to determine (1) the stage of fertility transition of Roma population in Turkey, (2) the proxy factors that cause Roma Population in Turkey falling behind in fertility transition process, (3) the probability of Roma women progression to third child, (4) the policy priorities necessary for Roma population in Turkey to catch up with Turkey in fertility transition. In order to achieve the first objective, the own children method and the birth cohort method will be used in the study. With these two methods, the fertility transition of the Roma population in Turkey over the past 35 years will be revealed. Using these two methods together will also ensure that the results produced by the methods are met. By revealing the fertility transition of the Turkish population during the same period, the stage of the Roma population in the fertility transition will be understood more clearly. In order to achieve the second objective, the proxy variables approach developed by Bongaarts will be used. With this approach, it will be tried to understand the intermediate variables (marriage, contraceptive use, miscarriages and infecundability) that cause the Roma population lacking behind in the fertility transition. In order to achieve this goal, a comparison with Turkey as a whole will be carried out. Within the scope of the third objective, parity progression ratios will be calculated for the Roma population living in Turkey. Later, these values will be compared with the values of Turkey and it will be revealed how far away the Roma population is from the replacement level of fertility. The fourth objective will be achieved by linking the results obtained in the first two goals with literature and theoretical frameworks. At this stage, in addition, examples of population policies applied for the Roma population in different countries will also be used by adapting these policies to the reality of Turkey.

Yüksek Lisans Tezi: Child Marriages, Autonomy and Afterthoughts: Investigating Marital Age Regret Through the Lens of Consent Among Child-Brides of the Roma Community in Turkey

Simay Hurşidi Çakır

Although there is a rich literature on child, early age and forced marriages, it primarily focuses on the negative consequences. However, there are relatively less understanding regarding the later experiences of those who married at a young age, particularly in terms of their autonomy in the decision-making process and their subsequent reflections on their marital timing. This study aims to examine how the level of agency in child marriage decisions among the Roma population in Turkey affects individuals’s retrospective views on their marriage age, which may interpreted as regret or change of mind. This research is being conducted in order to provide a statistical and scientific answer to the common perception that the regret of marital age is eliminated when they take place with the consent of the child. By dissecting the varied scenarios in which marriage occur (mutual decisions with partners, family imposed with consent and family imposed without consent) this research aims to unravel the complex relations of child marriage and regret to marital age. At the end, this research examines the phenomenon of “regret of marital age” within a sample of Roma women in Turkey, who entered into marriage during childhood, by quantifying the discrepancy between their actual age at marriage and the age they now, as adults, believe would have been suitable for themselves to enter marriage.
